About this variety

Totapuri Mango

Totapuri — known locally as Kilimooku or Bangalora — is one of the most widely grown mango varieties in South India, but Salem-grown Totapuri has a distinct character thanks to the region's soil and climate. Its elongated shape with a beak-like tip at one end makes it instantly recognisable. The flesh is firm, almost fibre-free, and has a refreshing mild-tangy flavour that makes it ideal for both fresh eating and juicing. Unlike sweeter varieties, Totapuri has a clean, balanced taste that does not overpower. It is the go-to variety for mango juice, mango milkshake, and mango pickle in Tamil Nadu.

Why Salem?

Salem-grown Totapuri develops a cleaner, more refreshing flavour compared to varieties grown in coastal districts. The drier climate concentrates the fruit's natural sugars and acids in a balanced ratio, giving it the crisp, firm texture it is known for.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Totapuri — also called Kilimooku or Bangalora — is a popular South Indian mango variety known for its distinctive elongated shape with a beak-like tip. It has mild, refreshing, slightly tangy flesh that is firm and almost fibre-free. It is widely used for eating fresh, juicing, and pickling.

Totapuri is mild and refreshing — it is gently tangy rather than sour, and not as sweet as Senthoora or Alphonso. This balanced flavour makes it excellent for mango juice, milkshakes, and eating fresh. It is also the preferred variety for South Indian mango pickles.

In Tamil, Totapuri is called Kilimooku (கிளிமூக்கு) meaning "parrot's beak" — a reference to its distinctive beak-shaped tip. It is also known as Ottu in parts of Tamil Nadu and Bangalora or Sandersha in other states.

Never. We ripen all our mangoes naturally in paddy hay (the traditional South Indian method) for 2–3 days after harvest. Calcium carbide — used by many traders to artificially speed up ripening — is never used at NativeRoots. Natural ripening develops the full flavour and aroma that artificial methods cannot replicate.

Our farm is located in Panaimadal, near Puthiragoundampalayam, in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, India (pincode 636117). Salem is one of the most celebrated mango-growing regions in India, known especially for the Senthoora variety.

We ship via air courier (Shiprocket) and most orders across India are delivered within 1–3 business days. We dispatch orders at the start of each week after the weekly harvest. You will receive a tracking number by email once your order ships.

Yes, we deliver to most pin codes across India. You can check delivery availability and the exact shipping cost by entering your pincode on any product page or in the cart.

If your mangoes arrive firm, keep them at room temperature for 1–2 days to finish ripening. Once ripe (slightly soft to touch, fragrant), refrigerate and consume within 2–3 days. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes as it stops the ripening process.

What our customers say

★★★★★

“I buy Totapuri every year for mango juice and pickle. Salem Totapuri has a completely different quality — firmer, cleaner flavour, holds up beautifully in pickle. My whole family noticed the difference immediately. The 10 kg box is excellent value and arrived very well-packed with not a bruise in sight.”

“I was sceptical about ordering mangoes online but these were genuinely excellent. The Totapuri was firm, fresh, and had that crisp tangy bite that makes it so good for juicing. Made a big batch of fresh mango juice and it was far better than anything from stores. Fast delivery and great packaging.”

“Our family has been ordering from NativeRoots for two seasons now. The Totapuri is consistent every time — same freshness, same quality. No chemical smell, no artificial ripening. My mother specifically asked me to keep ordering from the same place. That says it all.”

About our farm

Grown in Salem — delivered across India

NativeRoots is a family-run mango farm in Panaimadal, Salem district, Tamil Nadu (PIN 636117). We grow Senthoora, Totapuri, Rumani, and Imam Pasand on land that has been farmed for generations. Every mango is hand-picked at maturity and ripened in paddy hay — the traditional South Indian method that produces the full, natural flavour that artificial ripening can never replicate.

Salem is the mango capital of Tamil Nadu. The district's red laterite soil is mineral-rich, and the climate — warm, dry summers and moderate humidity — creates ideal growing conditions. Salem-grown mangoes, especially Senthoora, are sought after across South India for their intensity of flavour that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
