When is Salem mango season?

Salem's mango season runs April – June, and flavour is usually at its best in May. Senthoora and Totapuri — the two varieties we grow — are both picked through that window; buy in season and the fruit has been ripened naturally rather than held in cold storage.

The season at a glance

Why May is usually the best month

Early-season fruit in April is good, but by May the trees have had weeks of steady heat and the fruit reaches its fullest sweetness and fragrance. By late June the season tapers off as the harvest winds down.

Exact timing shifts a little every year with the weather — a late or early summer moves the harvest with it. We harvest weekly through the season and ship only what is fresh.

Why Salem mangoes taste different

Salem's red laterite soil is mineral-rich, and the region's warm days, dry summers and moderate humidity suit mangoes well. For Senthoora in particular, those conditions bring out its deep sweetness and reddish-pink blush. Salem-grown Totapuri develops a cleaner, more refreshing flavour than fruit from wetter coastal districts, with a crisp, firm texture.

That is why Senthoora is so closely tied to Salem — it is the variety the region is most celebrated for.

How we harvest

Our orchard in Panaimadal, near Puthiragoundampalayam, has over a hundred trees. Every week of the season:

  1. We hand-pick each mango at the start of the week, at the right stage of maturity.
  2. The fruit is inspected and placed in covered containers with paddy hay (vaikkol) for 2–3 days to ripen naturally.
  3. Ripe fruit is sorted, packed fresh and dispatched — see delivery times.

How to pick, ripen and store mangoes

A naturally ripened mango tells you when it is ready. Look for these signs:

  • Smell — a ripe mango is fragrant at the stem end. No smell usually means not ready.
  • Touch — it gives slightly when pressed gently, like a ripe avocado.
  • Colour — varies by variety. Senthoora turns golden with a pink-red blush; Totapuri stays green to bright yellow, so colour alone is a poor guide.
  • Firm on arrival? Leave it at room temperature for 1–2 days.
  • Ripe? Refrigerate and eat within 2–3 days. Never refrigerate unripe fruit — it stops ripening.

Buying out of season

Mangoes sold well outside April – June have usually been held in cold storage or ripened artificially. We do not do either, so we only sell during the harvest. Orders are closed for now and reopen with the next harvest.
